EIGHT SOUTH-EAST ASIA MULTI-STAKEHOLDER FORUM ON THE SDGs: ADVANCING COASTAL SUSTAINABILITY

On 13 November 2024, the Director of Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) was invited to participate in the Eighth South-East Asia Multi-Stakeholder Forum on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, the forum brought together regional and international stakeholders to discuss innovative approaches to achieving the SDGs in Southeast Asia.

CIMT was a panellist for Session 4: SDG 14 – Life Below Water, highlighting the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT)’s initiatives to promote sustainable coastal development. CIMT highlighted IMT-GT’s initiatives, including the proposed Oil Spill Emergency Response Capacity Building Project, which aims to enhance subregional preparedness for managing oil spill emergencies, and efforts under the Green Cities Mayor Council (GCMC). These efforts target marine pollution reduction through improved waste management systems, urban greening projects, and initiatives to minimise land-based pollutants.

Through these projects, IMT-GT underscored its commitment to balancing local livelihoods, marine conservation, and sustainable urban growth. CIMT’s participation reinforced the importance of subregional collaboration as a vital mechanism for tackling shared environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development across Southeast Asia.
